So, without getting too deep in this piece today, I am not a very religious person, I consider myself to be more of a spiritual person…to each their own. I grew up in a Jewish home, but again, not very religious. However, we learned basic principles, like the 10 commandments and stories to give us lessons on morals and ethics. That is really the main reason or argument that I have on why religion is needed in civilization.
I can’t speak for every religion, because I do not know what they promote, but the religions that are promoting kindness, love, generosity, don’t steal, be good to your neighbor – these are important principles we learn growing up. If we didn’t learn these things…we would be animals, there would be a lack in the ethics and morality within our communities and within ourselves…individually.
I also think that by having the option open that people can believe in a higher power or God, people become less lonely…people become curious about who and what they are. This is a big deal, because something that is so little to some people, could be life-changing to another…simply by the feeling, knowing, or practicing a belief in a higher power and knowing you are not alone.
Religion also connects people to duty and their purpose in life. Maybe some feel called to help others through some form of healing or whatnot. It is a great feeling to believe you are working toward a greater purpose than what is just seen in the material, physical world. Too many people can’t imagine how amazing their lives could be because they do not attempt to imagine the unimaginable.
While I do not agree pushing or compelling any belief system onto any person is right or okay, I think that religion gives many of us the building blocks to finding ourselves, and our own morals to stand by. Life doesn’t revolve around us…as sad as it may be…I am sorry. Life is about being fulfilled within yourself and giving back to others. Doing a mitzvah, the next right thing, standing up for truth, what is good.
This is what I believe many people (including myself) take away from religion – in the broadest terms…learning yourself, your morals, ethics, and perhaps…also finding something special, finding your purpose, that thing that calls you.
Lastly, I leave you with some questions to think on:
Without religion… would humans excel to such places of thought?
Would we treat each other with kindness, and dignity?
Would we be more inclined to lie, steal, commit sins?
This is just my theory & opinion.
Be well,
